TL;DR: These are pretty sweet, and in particular the large one is nice for wrenches and longer ratchets.
I received 2 different flexible automotive trays through the vine program (this being one of them), as I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison. I didn't know what to expect, but I definitely didn't think I would like them as much as I do. I honestly recommend both, but for different reasons. Obviously for this review I'll be focusing on the larger of the two.
It says flexible in the name, and they mean it. If you hold this thing up by one side it will droop over, so if you're transporting things in it you'll still need both hands. It definitely makes it easier to transport more tools though, as it has a few "trays" and there is a decent sized lip all around. The fact it's a silicone mat means things stick to it better and won't slide off as easily. It will attract more dirt and grime because of this, but it's easy enough to wash off with soapy water. Honestly, Dawn dish soap is one of the best degreasers for automotive parts and mechanics' hands, and that's what I would recommend using.
As you can see in my photo, it takes up a decent portion of my Focus ST's engine bay. I both like this and don't like this, which is where having another one or two sizes would come in handy. I like the fact it will hold pretty much anything I would want it to due to it's size, but I don't like the fact it basically covers a third of my engine bay. I think if you had a larger vehicle, or an older one, you'd get more use out of this because there are more gaps to clear. I'm also not sure how I feel about the color - it's easy enough to spot being so bright, but I feel like it's large enough it doesn't need to be. If I were to buy more I'd get a muted color instead of something so fluorescent. The other nice feature is heat and chemical resistance - something any mechanic will appreciate.
If you look closely at the photo you'll notice that there are half-round indents on the mat, which I'm assuming are designed for screwdrivers, punches, nut drivers - basically anything that would roll around. There is a tab on one corner which makes picking up the mat easy. The handles have a gap between them and the body of the mat (instead of being just a flap to hold onto) which means you can hang this thing on a wall or something out of the way. There is an "X" at the bottom for rigidity possibly, although I doubt it is doing much. It will, however, keep smaller items from rolling around too much. I like how it has a few different sized compartments too. I tried to throw a few things I had laying around into the photo to give an idea of sizing. I used a AA battery, an Amazon Essentials tire chuck (another vine item I will be reviewing shortly), Snap-On 3/8" digital torque wrench with a deep socket attached, an Armstrong extended 3/8" ratchet with an antique Craftsman socket attached, and a standard set of safety glasses. On the other mat I have 1/4" ratchet with universal joint and T20 socket, screwdriver, AA battery, some used castle nuts, VFD linker (another vine item I will review) and a few more sockets/adapters. Happy wrenching!
