I work at a body shop and I bought one of these for $40 from a guy at work last year. He was an old tech and said it was 35 years old and not to drop it. I cleaned it up best I could and had to get a muffler for it ($13), which is kind of a pain to put on but necessary for function (loud without it). I wondered what all the fuss about hutchins was and my wonder ceased after I noticed the smooth finish minutes later. Seems like it's set up for finish sanding not so much aggressive actions like leveling body filler. Actually it will but just not as fast as something with a more aggressive offset to it.
If there were any sins against it, they would center around the fact that it is heavier than many other sanders. While this helps of flat surfaces, it becomes a liability when sanding the belly of a boat or an aircraft... (I really noticed this when I started painting helicopters!)
Anyway, I use this specifically when I am sanding and buffing. I will not recommend this for major body work, instead, I would suggest a 3/16 offset sander for that.
I'm so glad my cheap orbital sander quit. Not really. But I am glad I bought a good one like this instead of buying another cheap one. This is quieter and has much less vibration that my old $35 one. Hindsight should have been invented sooner. I would have bought the Hutchins in the first place. I like it!
This is the best sander I've ever used, and it's built to last.
Very smooth and haven’t had any issues yet. I use it for knocking off the tops of bondo and for final sanding on clear coat and it works perfect. Highly recommend and these things will last you a lifetime!
Researched and developed for ultra-fine finishing. Custom handle option (handle not furnished with sander) guarantees proficient control at any angle. Flex-cover gives comfortable grip, prevents stiff fingers. Low profile, vibration-free motor insures full contact sanding. Unique air efficiency system.
Features
Over-size drive head eliminates pad-wobble for full contact sanding.
Positive-action drive supported by 4-special bearings generates more power on less air.
