Works as advertised. Did the job quickly and easily.
Had a rounded-out 17mm Oil Drain Plug on my Acura TL. Thought all was lost and had to take it to the stealership but found this tool online and decided to give it a try. Hammered it into the mentioned bolt for about 30 seconds and gave it a turn and it came right off! Make sure the bolt is in tight and level before attempting to unscrew ...Not hard to get it in the bolt at all...This tool is a GODSEND! 5 stars.
Great.
Couldn’t be more happy with a tool. The 17mm bolt on our 2006 Honda Pilot was severely stripped, almost to the point of being rounded off. No wrench even came close to grabbing on — I tried all kinds of tools including a Gator Grip universal socket, nothing would work.
With oil pan replacement estimates running between $300 and $600, it made sense to give this a shot. WOW… talk about money well spent.
I got this socket, tapped it onto the stripped bolt with a hammer as best I could to make sure it would grip the maximum amount of bolt. There’s not much room in there, but I figured I had one shot at this. I put my 3/8” socket on the Irwin bolt extractor and gave it a pull, still wouldn’t budge, but ALSO” wasn’t stripping the bolt further. I tapped on my 3/8” socket (lightly) with a hammer hoping to loosen, but that didn’t seem to yield any movement.
Determined and frustrated, I positioned myself up against the inside of the front tire, put on good mechanic gloves to prevent severe injury should my grip (or the bolt) give way, then put all my strength into loosening that stripped bolt from its death grip on my oil pan. Boom, it turned!
Fifteen minutes later I had the entire oil change done, complete with a new oil pan bolt, couldn’t be happier. I will say that I was afraid to over tighten this new oil pan bolt, so I may have to check it every few days for slow leaks. I’ll get it right, and it WILL NOT happen again.
Don’t be afraid to give it your all, a bolt that severely stripped probably needs a lot more torque than you’d expect. Thanks Irwin Tools — a fan for life!
Life saver. I couldn't get a rounded off drain plug using my entire toolset on my Honday Odyssey 2012. Did my research, saw that these extractors existed, read reviews, found the size for my van, and purchased it. I changed my oil yesterday after this tool helped me get off the drain bolt that I couldn't take off the day before. Changed the drain plug with a brand new one.
Totally recommended addition to your tool set.
