Negative reviews are due to user error I'm sure. I previously purchased a Lisle flaring kit, and not once had success with it despite several attempts (maybe due to user error as well). Rented this set from a local parts store and got a great flare on my first attempt (for the first time). Make sure the washers aren't between the two sides of he line-vice doo-hicky. The set I rented came with easy to understand directions. For what it's worth I'm a professional mechanic.
